AS A devout Catholic, the last thing Hutton Gibson should be doing is filing for divorce.

But TMZ reports that Mel Gibson's 93-year-old father has done just that, citing irreconcilable differences as the reason for his desired split from Teddy Joye Gibson.

Hutton wants his second wife, who is in her 70s, to pay his legal fees and provide spousal support.

He married Teddy Joye in 2002, 12 years after his first wife, Anne Reilly, died. Hutton and Anne had 11 children, including Mel.

It's unlikely the divorce settlement will be as costly as Mel's; the film-maker's divorce from his wife of 31 years in 2009 ended in her walking away with a reported $400 million.

Robyn Gibson filed for a divorce just days after news broke that Gibson's now-estranged girlfriend, Oksana Grigorieva, was pregnant.

Hutton, like Mel, is a hardline Catholic. The World War II veteran is an outspoken critic of the post-Vatican II Roman Catholic Church and has been accused of anti-Semitism and denying the Holocaust.
